The History of

Linton Gardens:

The property Linton gardens houses one of Australia’s most significant gardens. In particular the garden has one of these countries most important collections of Camellias with plantings going back over a century. Linton Gardens has been the home to Camellia breeders for most of this time with varieties such as “Brushfield Yellow”,” Alexander Hunter” and “Edith Linton” bred in the early years.

The surrounding “Kewita” property, which includes Linton Gardens, was one of the original developed orchids taken up in the early 1880’s as an original land grant to Alexander and David Hunter.
George and Edith Linton who continued to develop new varieties of Camellias as well as introduce viable varieties of oranges, lemons and mandarins subsequently purchased the property. George Linton’s adopted son, Keith Brushfield, inherited the property continuing its development with ongoing emphasis on Camellias.
In 1958 Ted and Rae Humphries took over the property and continued to foster the planting of new Camellia varieties.
The property also housed a heritage house built in 1888 catering to functions on a smaller scale. On Saturday 9th September 1995 Linton Gardens heritage house was lost in the fires. The properties were reunited in 1996 when the Dornan family re developed the function and reception centre facilities to what they are today then re opened for trading officially by Clr.Tony Sansom on the 17th October 1997
. The property still houses heritage listed Camellia trees and a recently restored historical chapel whilst maintaining its ever-high standard of service thru our conference and function facilities.
